How to Control Home Humidity in the Winter

It is important to monitor the humidity level of your home in the winter. If there is not enough humidity it causes dry skin; too much moisture leads to mold and mildew growth. In the winter, humidity levels drop because colder air holds less moisture than warm air, but since most people leave their windows closed all winter the humidity can become too much.

How can you tell if it is too humid? If you do not have a whole house humidification system that monitors and controls the humidity levels, the best way to tell is if there is condensation on the inside of your home’s windows.

What to do if there is too little moisture:

  • leave a vessel of water on or near the radiator
  • use a portable humidifier
  • invest in a whole house humidifier

What to do if there is too much moisture:

  • turn off humidifier
  • use fans while cooking
  • take shorter showers
